9 Celebrities Who Play the Lottery

You might think that celebrities already have it all, but that doesn’t mean they are immune to the pull of the lottery. Here are some celebrities who are known to play the lottery on occasion.

50 Cent

The rapper filed for bankruptcy in 2015, so maybe that’s why he’s drawn to the idea of instant riches. He played the Powerball lottery in 2018 when the jackpot soared. He posted a picture on Instagram to show that he’d matched three out of the five winning numbers of the jackpot.

George Clooney

George Clooney tried to play the lottery to other people’s benefit. When the Italian SuperEnaLotta had a $117 million jackpot in 2010, he purchased €1,500 in tickets. He promised to donate the winnings to Haiti earthquake victims if he won. His friend, Elizabeth Hurley, did the same thing with the same promise.

Hilary Clinton

While the public doesn’t know for sure if she plays regularly or not, Clinton did confirm on Good Morning America that she bought a ticket for Powerball when it hit the world record jackpot in January 2018.

Hugh Jackman

Jackman has apparently always loved playing the lottery–so much so that he helps other people play. He has a tradition of buying lottery tickets for crew members on the film sets he works on. Nobody seems to have won big, but he’s bought hundreds of tickets for people over the years.

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton bought 1,500 tickets in the SuperEnaLotto in 2008. Unlike other stars, she wasn’t planning to give the whole winnings to charity if she won. She said she’d only do 10%.

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is famous for his harsh critiques on reality shows like America’s Got Talent and American Idol. He may have a little less talent for playing the lottery because it doesn’t appear that he’s ever won anything. Cowell marks on tickets that he doesn’t want the press to know if he does.

No matter how big his fortune gets, he said, “I still buy lottery tickets. I still play.”

Madonna

Madonna doesn’t just play the lottery — she wins it. She frequently plays the SuperEnaLotto to support the lottery market in Italy. In 2012, she bought 100 tickets and won €120,000, which is approximately US $250,000. She donated her winnings to building a school in Malawi.

Wayne Rooney

One of the stars of the Manchester United football team loves playing the lottery. He even gets his friends to buy him tickets to see if he can get lucky. It’s not enough to be a beloved footballer on one of England’s most popular teams?

Woody Allen

Film director Woody Allen once told The Guardian that he spends $100 a week on lottery tickets. He says that if he won, he and his wife would still live in the same house and keep working. “I don’t want a boat, I don’t want a plane,” he said.

Marion Prince

Marion Prince

If Marion Price ever won the lottery, she’d accept the winnings anonymously, hire a lawyer right away, and live modestly on the interest payments from her lump-sum payment. Not that she has a plan or anything…

She finds the stories of lotto winners fascinating—especially those rags-to-riches-to-rags again stories of winners who had it all and then lost everything.

When she’s not researching tales of winners and losers for HowTheLuck, Marion enjoys horseback riding and hiking.
